India Dominate Day One of First Test Against England at Headingley. India took firm control on the opening day of the first Test against England, showcasing a commanding batting display in the inaugural match of the five-Test Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series. The match, underway at Headingley in Leeds, began on Friday, June 20, and it was the visitors who clearly had the upper hand by stumps.
Opting to bat first after being put in by England, India got off to a flying start thanks to a solid opening stand between KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal. The pair added 91 runs, with Rahul contributing a composed 42, while Jaiswal looked in supreme touch, going on to score a brilliant 101.
Just before lunch, England managed to claw their way back briefly, dismissing Rahul and debutant Sai Sudharsan, who fell for a four-ball duck. But the momentum soon swung back in India’s favour.
Captain Shubman Gill, leading the Test side for the first time, played a captain’s knock with an unbeaten 127. He was well supported by Jaiswal earlier and then by Rishabh Pant, who chipped in with a fluent 65* as the two added another strong partnership to frustrate the English bowlers.
By the close of play, India had reached an imposing 359/3, with Gill and Pant looking well-set at the crease. The conditions at Headingley appeared ideal for batting, and they are expected to remain favourable going into day two.
India will look to capitalize on their strong start and post a massive first-innings total. England, on the other hand, will be desperate to find breakthroughs early on the second day to prevent the match from slipping further out of their grasp.
