Taskin Ahmed’s Record-Breaking 7/19 in BPL

Taskin Ahmed achieved a sensational 7 for 19 for Durbar Rajshahi, setting a new BPL record. He became only the third bowler in men’s T20 cricket history to claim seven wickets in an innings, showcasing a stunning performance that will be remembered as one of the finest in the format.

Record

Taskin Ahmed etched his name in cricketing history, becoming only the third bowler to claim a seven-wicket haul in men’s T20s. His incredible 7 for 19 came during Durbar Rajshahi’s Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) clash against Dhaka Capitals, setting a new benchmark for the best bowling figures in BPL history. He surpassed Mohammad Amir’s previous record of 6 for 17 for Khulna Tigers in 2020.

Taskin’s stellar performance highlights his remarkable consistency across formats, following a sensational 2024 where he bagged 63 international wickets at an average of 19.23, the highest by any Bangladeshi bowler that year.

By achieving this feat, Taskin joins an elite group featuring Colin Ackermann, who first claimed seven wickets in a T20 during the 2019 Vitality Blast, and Malaysia’s Syazrul Idrus, who achieved the milestone against China in 2023.

In the match at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, Dhaka Capitals opted to bat first, but Taskin quickly dismantled their top order. He dismissed Litton Das with a sharp short ball fended to first slip and removed Tanzid Hasan, who edged behind while chasing a wide delivery, all within his first two overs.

“You need luck to get five. I am really happy [to take seven]. It’s a big deal for me. I am from Bangladesh so I will remember holding this BPL record.”

Dhaka’s middle-overs recovery was interrupted by Taskin’s brilliance, as he claimed the wicket of Shahadat Hossain in the 17th over. Shahadat, beaten by a slower ball, was caught at long-on by Ryan Burl. Taskin then added Chaturanga de Silva to his tally in the same over, before a stunning final over performance, claiming three wickets. The 20th over saw Alauddin Babu skying one to mid-off, followed by Taskin’s yorker to dismiss Mukidul Islam.

Though he missed a hat-trick, Taskin took Shubham Ranjane on the next ball, finishing with exceptional figures of 4-0-19-7. The surge of wickets in the last four overs left Dhaka with a moderate total of 175, which Rajshahi chased down comfortably in the 19th over with seven wickets in hand.

Taskin Reflects on BPL Record: “A Special Moment for Me”

Taskin expressed immense pride in his record-breaking performance, becoming the bowler with the best figures in BPL history. “I have always visualized taking wickets. Without that, you can’t make it happen. Luck plays a part, but executing plans is crucial. I’m happy to deliver when my captain calls on me,” Taskin said. He emphasized the significance of his five-wicket haul, noting, “It is always special in any format. It’s a big deal for me, especially as a Bangladeshi. I will always remember holding this BPL record.” Taskin also spoke highly of the Shere Bangla National Stadium pitches, acknowledging their sporting nature and highlighting how the pitches would prepare them well for the Champions Trophy in February.
