Steve Smith sets sights on representing Australia at LA 2028 Olympics

Steve Smith has expressed his desire to represent Australia in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics but admitted that securing a place in the national squad could be challenging.

Cricket is set to make its Olympic return after 128 years, having last featured at the Paris 1900 Games. The 2028 edition will see six men’s and six women’s teams compete in the T20 format, with matches scheduled for July.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is yet to confirm the qualification pathway for the event, which adds further intrigue to the selection process.

Former Australia captain Steve Smith has set his sights on representing his country at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, where cricket will make its return to the Games. Speaking to Sky Sports, Steve Smith admitted it will be a “tricky” challenge to break into Australia’s strong T20I side but remains determined.

“It’s a goal of mine to try and make that Olympic team in 2028. The Aussie T20 team is doing really well, so it won’t be easy. But if I keep putting my best foot forward, who knows?” Steve Smith said.

Having grown up watching the Olympics, Steve Smith revealed he was excited when cricket was confirmed for LA 2028. “I’ve always loved watching the Olympics. To be able to represent Australia on that stage would be really special.”

Smith, who has already featured in World Cups, the Ashes, and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, sees the Games as a unique opportunity. However, age could be a factor — he will be 39 by 2028. Earlier this year, he retired from ODIs but remains active in Tests and T20Is.
