The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is set to make its highly anticipated comeback this February after an eight-year hiatus. The last edition of the tournament was held in 2017 in England.
India finds itself in Group A, alongside arch-rivals Pakistan, New Zealand, and Bangladesh, promising intense competition from the outset. During the 2017 campaign, India experienced a rollercoaster journey. The team showcased dominance by winning four consecutive matches to secure a spot in the final. However, their title aspirations were dashed by Pakistan in a one-sided final, with India enduring a crushing 180-run defeat.
1. Shikhar Dhawan
Shikhar Dhawan was a standout performer in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, finishing as India’s third-highest run-scorer. He amassed 338 runs in five innings at an impressive average of 67.6 and a strike rate of 101.80. Alongside Rohit Sharma, Dhawan formed formidable opening partnerships, which were instrumental in India’s dominant campaign until the final.
On August 24, 2024, Dhawan announced his retirement from international cricket. His last ODI appearance for India was against Bangladesh in 2022.
2. MS Dhoni
Legendary wicketkeeper-batter and former Indian captain MS Dhoni retired from international cricket on August 15, 2020. His final appearance for India came during the semi-final of the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup against New Zealand, where his run-out ended India’s hopes of reaching the final.
In the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, Dhoni scored 63 runs in two innings at a strike rate of 98.52.
3. Dinesh Karthik
Dinesh Karthik was part of India’s squad in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy but didn’t feature in any matches, as Kedar Jadhav and Yuvraj Singh were preferred in the playing XI. However, Karthik had been a crucial member of India’s victorious 2013 Champions Trophy squad.
Karthik announced his retirement on June 1, 2024. His final international match was against Bangladesh during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2022.
4. Yuvraj Singh
Iconic all-rounder Yuvraj Singh retired from international cricket on June 10, 2019. His final match for India was against the West Indies in North Sound in 2017.
In the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, Yuvraj played a pivotal role in the middle order. He scored 105 runs across five innings, averaging 35 with a strike rate of 99. His top score, 53, came in the group-stage clash against Pakistan.
5. Ravichandran Ashwin
Ravichandran Ashwin played as India’s second-choice spinner in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, behind Ravindra Jadeja. Ashwin had a challenging campaign, managing just one wicket in three matches at an average of 167. Following this, he was dropped from the white-ball squads but eventually staged a comeback.
Ashwin retired from international cricket on December 18, 2024, after India’s Test match against Australia in Brisbane.
6. Kedar Jadhav
Kedar Jadhav concluded his brief but impactful international career on June 3, 2024. He debuted in 2014 and played his last ODI on February 8, 2020, against New Zealand in Auckland.
