After guiding India to a record 336-run victory at Edgbaston, Shubman Gill took a cheeky dig at a journalist who had questioned India’s poor record at the venue.
Shubman Gill Silences Critics with Historic Win at Edgbaston

India were dismissed by many after their five-wicket defeat in Leeds. Batting collapses from the lower order and lack of pace support for Jasprit Bumrah raised alarm bells—even among veteran Indian cricketers. But in a dramatic turnaround at Edgbaston, India responded under the inspired leadership of Shubman Gill.
Shubman Gill led from the front with a record-breaking show—scoring both a double century and a century in the same match—to propel India to a resounding 336-run victory, their biggest-ever Test win on foreign soil.
After being named Player of the Match, Shubman Gill arrived at the press conference with a pointed message. He searched the room for a journalist who had previously questioned India’s poor Test record at Edgbaston, where the team had failed to win in 19 previous attempts over 56 years.
“I can’t see my favourite journalist. Where is he? I wanted to see him,” Shubman Gill said with a smile. “I don’t really believe in history and stats. Over the last 56 years, nine different Indian teams have played here. I believe we are the best team to have come to England, and we have the capability to beat them, to win the series from here. If we keep making the right decisions and keep fighting, I think it would be one of the series to remember.”
‘This is the best Indian team…’

India scripted a landmark victory at Edgbaston on Sunday, claiming their first-ever Test win at the venue and leveling the five-match series 1-1. The triumph wasn’t just symbolic—it was emphatic. The 336-run margin became India’s biggest away win in Test history, eclipsing their previous record 318-run victory over West Indies in 2019 at North Sound.
Leading the charge was captain Shubman Gill, who produced a performance for the ages. With scores of 269 and 161, Shubman Gill amassed 430 runs—becoming the first captain in Test history to score over 400 runs in a single match. He was well-supported by Ravindra Jadeja and Rishabh Pant, as India racked up a combined total of 1014 runs across both innings.
Yet, the most remarkable storyline was the dominance of India’s pace attack in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, who was rested to manage his workload ahead of the Lord’s Test. The decision was widely criticised, with experts fearing a 0-2 deficit. Instead, Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep delivered a stunning rebuttal. On a flat Edgbaston pitch, they struck early with the new ball in both innings. Akash, stepping in for Bumrah, bagged a sensational 10-wicket match haul, while Siraj chipped in with six crucial wickets.
In the post-match press conference, Gill praised the team’s all-round strength and underlined his pre-series belief in this squad. “I said this before the match—this Indian team is one of the best to have toured England,” he stated. “The best 16 are chosen to represent the country. All our bowlers have the ability to contribute and take 20 wickets. Of course, Jasprit bhai is one of the best in the world, but today was proof that any Indian bowling unit can win us matches, anywhere.”
