3 Indian ODI captains maintained perfect win records. One led the team to victory in a single match, another won all six matches he captained, and the third secured a clean sweep in three ODIs, showcasing exceptional leadership and consistency whenever given the opportunity to captain the side.
1. Anil Kumble
Anil Kumble, India’s all-time leading international wicket-taker, captained the Test team in 14 matches between 2007 and 2008. However, his first opportunity to lead came earlier in 2002 during an ODI against England in Chennai. With Sourav Ganguly injured, Kumble stepped in as captain. India won by 4 wickets, with Sachin Tendulkar’s 68 guiding the team to chase 218. Kumble also contributed with the ball, taking two crucial wickets—Andrew Flintoff and Michael Vaughan. Despite this successful debut, Kumble never captained India in ODIs again, maintaining a flawless 100% win record as ODI captain
2. Gautam Gambhir
Gautam Gambhir, one of India’s most reliable big-game white-ball batsmen, led India in 6 ODIs between 2010 and 2011 during times when MS Dhoni was either rested or injured. Under Gambhir’s leadership, India won all 6 matches. Notably, in December 2010, Gambhir captained India to a 5-0 series whitewash over New Zealand, earning the Player of the Series award for scoring 329 runs, including two centuries. A year later, he captained in an ODI against the West Indies in Chennai, securing another victory, maintaining an unblemished record as India’s ODI captain.
3. Ajinkya Rahane
Ajinkya Rahane, with a flawless record as India’s captain, has not lost any of his 6 Test matches (4 wins and 2 draws). He also remained unbeaten in ODIs, leading India to victory in all 3 matches during the 2015 Zimbabwe tour, when India fielded a second-string side with MS Dhoni rested. Rahane contributed with the bat, scoring a fifty in one of the three matches, maintaining a perfect win record as India’s ODI captain.
