South Africa holds the record for the highest run chase in ODI cricket. They chased 436 runs against Australia in 2006.
India appears three times in the top 10 list of successful run chases in ODIs – twice against Australia and once against England.

10. New Zealand vs Australia (2007)
In 2007, New Zealand chased 350 runs against Australia in a thrilling match. BB McCullum scored 86 important runs, helping New Zealand win by one wicket in the last over.
9. England vs New Zealand (2015)
In the 4th ODI of New Zealand’s 2015 tour of England, New Zealand made 349 runs, with Martin Guptill, Kane Williamson, and Grant Elliott making half-centuries. England chased it down in 44 overs with centuries from Joe Root and Eoin Morgan.
8. India vs Australia (2013)
In the 6th ODI of Australia’s 2013 tour, Australia scored 350 runs, with Shane Watson and George Bailey making half-centuries. Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli each made centuries to guide India to a win with three balls left.
7. India vs England (2017)
During England’s 2017 tour of India, England made 350 runs in the 1st ODI, with Jason Roy, Joe Root, and Ben Stokes making half-centuries. India chased the target in two overs less, with Virat Kohli scoring 122 and Kedar Jadhav 120.
6. Australia vs India (2019)
In the 4th ODI of Australia’s 2019 India tour, Australia chased 359 runs to win. India scored big with Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan’s partnership, but Peter Handscomb (117) and Ashton Turner (84) led Australia to a comfortable win.
5. England vs Pakistan (2019)
In the 3rd ODI, Pakistan made 358 runs. Imam ul Haq scored 151 runs. England chased the target in almost five overs, with Jonny Bairstow making a century, and Jason Roy and Joe Root contributing. It was one of the highest run chases in ODI history.
4. India vs Australia (2013)
In 2013, Australia made 359 runs with contributions from Aaron Finch, Phillip Hughes, Shane Watson, Glenn Maxwell, and George Bailey. India chased the target in just 43.3 overs, with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli scoring centuries. Shikhar Dhawan made 95. India won by 9 wickets. MS Dhoni said, “One of the best chases you’ll ever see.”
3. England vs West Indies (2019)
In Bridgetown, West Indies scored 360 runs, with Chris Gayle making a century and Shai Hope scoring a half-century. England chased it down with more than an over left, thanks to Jason Roy and Joe Root’s centuries and Eoin Morgan’s half-century. Roy’s strike rate was 144.70.
2. South Africa vs Australia (2016)
Again, South Africa and Australia were involved in a big chase. Australia scored 371 runs, with David Warner scoring 117 and Steve Smith making a century. South Africa chased the target in 49.2 overs, with David Miller (118*), Quinton de Kock (70), and Hashim Amla (45) helping the team win. Miller said, “It’s a special one.”

In 2006, South Africa made history by chasing the highest target in ODI cricket. Australia scored 435 runs, thanks to Ricky Ponting’s 164. South Africa chased this down in Johannesburg, with Herschelle Gibbs scoring 175 runs. Graeme Smith and Mark Boucher also made half-centuries. South Africa won with just one ball left. Gibbs later said, “I had a feeling it would be a special day.”
