Sri Lankan all-rounder Dunith Wellalage featured in his first match of the Asia Cup 2025 against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi. However, the game turned into a heartbreaking one for the youngster, as tragedy struck his family during the match.
Wellalage’s father, Suranga Wellalage, passed away on Thursday, September 18, while Dunith was on the field. The 21-year-old came to know about the devastating news only after Sri Lanka’s group-stage clash against Afghanistan had ended. Head coach Sanath Jayasuriya was the one to inform him, a moment that was later circulated widely on social media, with fans and the cricket fraternity offering condolences.
Asia Cup: Following the news, Wellalage immediately returned home. According to a report by ESPNCricinfo, the all-rounder has withdrawn from the rest of the Asia Cup 2025. This means Sri Lanka will have to play their Super Four fixtures—against Bangladesh (September 20), Pakistan (September 23), and India (September 26)—without him.
So far, Wellalage has represented Sri Lanka in five T20Is, with the Afghanistan match being his latest appearance. Unfortunately, it was a tough outing for him, as veteran Mohammad Nabi struck him for five sixes in the final over of the innings.
Dunith Wellalage’s absence from the Asia Cup 2025 is a major setback for Sri Lanka.

Fortunately, his absence didn’t affect the immediate outcome, as Sri Lanka produced a brilliant performance to secure a crucial win. After conceding 169 runs in 20 overs, they successfully chased down the target with six wickets in hand and eight balls to spare, sealing their spot in the Super Four stage.
With the next phase approaching and spin-friendly conditions expected, Wellalage’s absence could still prove costly. Sri Lanka are yet to confirm a replacement, leaving fans waiting to see whether one will be announced.
Asia Cup: Despite this blow, Sri Lanka have been in outstanding form throughout the tournament. They finished the group stage unbeaten, registering wins over Bangladesh, Hong Kong, and Afghanistan. Riding this momentum, they will be eager to maintain their dominance and aim for yet another Asia Cup title.
