Rohit Sharma Clears Fitness Test, Eyes ODI Return Against Australia

Rohit Sharma

India ODI captain Rohit Sharma is set to make his return to international cricket for the ODI tour of Australia later this year after successfully clearing the pre-season fitness test at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru on Sunday. Rohit has been out of action since the IPL 2025 season.

Midway through the season with Mumbai Indians, Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket—just two weeks before the England tour selection and amid speculation about his international future. While the BCCI confirmed he would continue as ODI skipper, doubts resurfaced in August, with reports hinting at a possible 50-over retirement after the Australia tour in October.

Although he has not addressed the rumours, Rohit Sharma fitness clearance boosts his chances of leading India in the upcoming series. He is also expected to feature in India A’s three one-day matches against Australia A in Kanpur on September 30, October 3, and October 5 as preparation. For now, the veteran opener awaits official confirmation of his selection but is likely to continue training at the CoE in Bengaluru.

Gill, Bumrah clear fitness test ahead of Asia Cup

India Test captain Shubman Gill has cleared the fitness test ahead of the Asia Cup, where he has been named vice-captain. The 25-year-old had earlier withdrawn from the Duleep Trophy, where he was set to lead North Zone, due to fever and spent the past few days resting at his hometown.

Teammates Jasprit Bumrah and wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma, both included in the Asia Cup squad, also passed the fitness parameters. The assessments included not only the Yo-Yo test but also a DXA Scan, a simplified method to measure bone density.

According to PTI, Mohammed Siraj, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Washington Sundar, and Shardul Thakur also cleared the test at the CoE without concern. Jaiswal and Sundar are on the standby list for the Asia Cup, while Thakur will stay in Bengaluru to lead West Zone in the Duleep Trophy semifinal against Central Zone from September 4.

Other squad members—Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, Kuldeep Yadav, and Riyan Parag (standby)—who were all involved in Duleep Trophy quarterfinals, are expected to undergo a separate fitness test soon.
