The veteran batter stressed that Iyer deserves clear communication from the selectors regarding his omission, which has already sparked debate among fans and experts.
Shreyas Iyer enjoyed a stellar run in IPL 2025, where he not only guided Punjab Kings (PBKS) to the final but also amassed over 600 runs in 17 matches at an impressive average of 50.33 and a blazing strike rate of 175.07.
Earlier this year, he was India’s top run-getter in the ICC Champions Trophy, further strengthening his case for selection. Many expected him to be a certain pick for the Asia Cup. However, chief selector Ajit Agarkar clarified that while Shreyas Iyer is not to blame, the current T20I setup has no room for him at present.
Ajinkya Rahane: Selectors Must Maintain Clear Communication with Shreyas Iyer

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ajinkya Rahane said that Shreyas Iyer must be disappointed after being left out of India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad despite his outstanding performances in IPL 2025. Rahane stressed that the selectors should maintain transparent communication with Iyer, who remains a vital prospect for India’s T20 setup.
“I’m sure he (Shreyas Iyer) must be really disappointed considering the kind of IPL he had. It was a fantastic season. Even in domestic cricket, especially in the 50-over format, he has delivered whenever given opportunities. I also understand the team management’s perspective—they can only select 15 players while maintaining balance in the squad,” Rahane said.
“The only thing I hope for is proper communication between the selectors, team management, and Shreyas. He’s an important player, and I’m certain he will play a key role in India’s T20 plans going forward. Clear communication is the key,” he added.
Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav has been appointed captain for Asia Cup 2025, with Shubman Gill named vice-captain, marking his return to the shortest format after over a year.
The Asia Cup 2025 begins on September 9 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). India have been drawn into Group A alongside Pakistan, UAE, and Oman. Their campaign starts against the UAE on September 10 in Dubai.
