Harmanpreet Kaur will captain India Women at the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025. The Indian skipper expressed confidence that her team will put in their best efforts to lift the coveted trophy. The tournament will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, with the latter set to host Pakistan’s fixtures, and will kick off on September 30.
Eight teams will compete in the event — India, Sri Lanka, Australia, New Zealand, Bangladesh, Pakistan, England, and South Africa.
Despite several strong campaigns, India Women are yet to win an ODI World Cup title. They finished runners-up in 2005, secured third place in 2009, and came heartbreakingly close in 2017, falling to England in the final at Lord’s.

On Monday, August 11, the 50-day countdown to the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup kicked off with a grand launch ceremony in Mumbai, inaugurated by ICC Chairman Jay Shah. India captain Harmanpreet Kaur attended the event alongside teammates Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues.
Speaking at the ceremony, Harmanpreet Kaur vowed that the Indian team would leave no stone unturned in their quest for the elusive World Cup title.
“Playing in front of a home crowd is always special. Hopefully, this time we’ll give our 100 per cent and finally break the barrier that Indian fans have been waiting for,” she told Cricbuzz.
Harmanpreet Kaur: The skipper also looked back on her iconic 171-run knock against Australia in the 2017 semi-final — an innings that propelled India into the final and etched her name in cricketing history.
“I still remember that knock – it was very special. A lot changed for me personally after that. At the time, I didn’t fully realise its impact, but when we returned to India after losing the final, the crowd’s overwhelming support was truly unforgettable,” she added.
The ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 will begin on September 30, with India facing Sri Lanka in the opener at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Harmanpreet Kaur, The final is scheduled for November 2.
In the 2022 edition, India failed to make the semi-finals, while Australia lifted the trophy after defeating England by 71 runs in the Christchurch final.
