Shreyas Iyer Poised for Comeback in India’s T20I Squad for Asia Cup and Home Tests vs West Indies, South Africa – Reports

Shreyas Iyer, who last featured in a Test in February 2024 and a T20I in December 2023, is set for a long-awaited comeback to India’s Test and T20I squads. As per a report by TOI, the selectors are planning to include him in the squad for the Asia Cup 2025 and the upcoming home Test series against West Indies and South Africa.

Shreyas Iyer most recent outing for India came during the ICC Champions 2025 earlier this year, where he emerged as the team’s top run-getter, scoring 243 runs in five matches. Following that, the 30-year-old captained Punjab Kings (PBKS) to the final of IPL 2025 in June, after being appointed as their skipper.

Despite his consistent performances, the right-hander had been out of favour in both formats for over a year — his last T20I appearance being against Australia in December 2023, and his last Test match against England in February 2024.

Selectors Confident Shreyas Iyer Can Bolster India’s Middle Order – Reports

According to a TOI report, sources close to the selection committee have revealed that the selectors believe Shreyas Iyer’s return will significantly strengthen India’s middle order across all three formats. His proven skill against spin is seen as a major asset, especially for the upcoming home Test series against the West Indies and South Africa.

“We need Shreyas Iyer class and experience in the middle order in all formats. It’s something we missed in England during the Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy,” a source told TOI.

The selectors are particularly keen on Shreyas Iyer ability to handle spin bowling — a factor they consider crucial with four home Tests lined up, two each against West Indies in October and South Africa in November.

Before that, India will compete in the Asia Cup 2025, beginning September 9, with squad selection expected later this month. The tournament ends on September 28, after which India’s home Test assignments will commence.

Shreyas Iyer, who has played 14 Tests so far, has scored 811 runs in 24 innings at an average of 36.86, including one century and five fifties. His next appearance will be in the Duleep Trophy 2025–26 starting August 28, where he will represent the West Zone.
