Adam Gilchrist overlooks Virat Kohli, names MS Dhoni as captain of his all-time IPL XI.

Adam Gilchrist featured in 80 IPL matches between 2008 and 2013. The former Australian wicketkeeper-batter, who famously led the Deccan Chargers to their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title in 2009, recently unveiled his all-time IPL XI. Notably, Gilchrist named MS Dhoni as the captain of his star-studded lineup, while leaving out Virat Kohli. The selection came with a specific criterion — only players who have won at least one IPL trophy were eligible.

Due to this rule, Kohli, who has been a part of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) since the league’s inception in 2008 but has never won an IPL title, did not make the cut.

Gilchrist’s lineup was heavily influenced by stars from Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the two most successful franchises in IPL history. In fact, eight of the 11 players in his dream team were either current or former members of these two powerhouse teams.

Adam Gilchrist named MS Dhoni as the captain of his all-time IPL playing XI. His team also features Rohit Sharma, who holds the record for the most IPL titles (6). Among his selections are David Warner and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, both of whom won the IPL title with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in 2016. The complete lineup of Gilchrist’s all-time IPL XI is listed below.

Adam Gilchrist’s All-Time IPL XI:

MS Dhoni (C), Rohit Sharma, David Warner, Suresh Raina, Suryakumar Yadav, Kieron Pollard, Sunil Narine, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Lasith Malinga, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Interestingly, Sunil Narine, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and David Warner are the only three players in Gilchrist’s lineup who have not represented Mumbai Indians (MI) or Chennai Super Kings (CSK). In IPL 2025, Narine is playing for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and Kumar is part of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Warner, however, is not part of the IPL 2025 season, having gone unsold in the mega auction.
