With the announcement of an impending ceasefire between India and Pakistan, there is renewed optimism for the early return of the IPL, which was suspended for a week amid rising tensions. The ceasefire offers a clearer path for the tournament’s resumption, a sentiment echoed by BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla.

Speaking to PTI following the ceasefire news, Shukla said, “With the new development of a ceasefire, the BCCI, IPL Governing Council, office bearers, and officials will meet tomorrow to discuss the situation.”

He added that the meeting would involve a comprehensive review of the schedule and logistical planning: “We will review the tournament schedule and determine the best possible way to complete it. All aspects, including venues, which were originally decided during the time of conflict will be reconsidered. A final decision will be taken shortly.”

IPL 2025 was suspended for a one-week period following heightened tensions along the India-Pakistan border. The match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals became the flashpoint, as power outages in Dharamsala forced a mass evacuation from the HPCA Stadium, placing players and fans in a precarious situation.

‘Give some time to us…’

Rajeev Shukla has shed light on contingency plans to potentially shift the remainder of IPL 2025 to South Indian cities like Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bangalore. “That was an option when the war was going on—the South Indian option,” Shukla said. “There are many options being discussed, but now that the ceasefire has just been announced, we need some time. We’ll consult with other office bearers and governing officials before making any decisions.”

The IPL was officially suspended for a week due to escalating border tensions, with the safety of players and support for the Indian Armed Forces being central to the BCCI’s call. The impact of the conflict extended beyond India, as the Pakistan Super League (PSL) was also paused, with its proposed relocation to the UAE being declined.

As uncertainty looms, several overseas players have already left India, casting further doubt on the feasibility of resuming the tournament. With only a shortened window left in May, completing the 17 remaining matches poses a significant logistical challenge.
