Ashish Nehra’s Emotions Swing as GT Fielding Falters Against MI

Ashish Nehra

Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra was visibly emotional during the IPL 2025 match against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium on May 6. His joy was evident when Rohit Sharma was dismissed early, but it quickly turned to despair and frustration as GT fielders dropped one catch after another in the powerplay. Nehra’s frustration peaked when the third catch was spilled, and he covered his face, standing in front of the dugout.

The dropped catches started with Sai Sudharsan, who missed a simple opportunity to dismiss MI opener Will Jacks in the first over. Jacks, who had not scored yet, went on to score 53 runs off 35 balls. The next costly drop came from Mohammed Siraj, who missed an easier chance off Jacks when he was on 29. In between, Sai Kishore gave Suryakumar Yadav a reprieve, allowing him to take a couple of runs after tipping a delivery.

Dropped Catches and Spinners’ Dominance Lead Gujarat to Victory

After a critical dropped catch, Ashish Nehra visibly struggled to contain his emotions, crying out in frustration and covering his face in helplessness. However, Gujarat Titans bounced back through the efforts of their spinners, Rashid Khan and R Sai Kishore (2/34), who seized control as Mumbai Indians faltered under pressure.

Will Jacks, who survived two dropped catches, scored a crucial fifty, while Suryakumar Yadav made a quick 34. However, the rest of the MI batting order, including skipper Hardik Pandya (1) and Tilak Varma (7), couldn’t rise to the challenge.

The contest began with an eventful first over by Mohammed Siraj (1/29), where B Sai Sudharsan took a fine low catch to dismiss Ryan Rickelton (2) but dropped another off Jacks. Rohit Sharma (7) struggled against Arshad Khan (1/18), who kept things tight and eventually dismissed Rohit in the fourth over. Suryakumar welcomed Prasidh Krishna (1/37) with two beautiful drives but got lucky when Sai Kishore fumbled a straightforward catch.

Arshad Khan also suffered a dropped catch off Jacks in the sixth over, further benefiting Mumbai, who reached 56 for 2 at the end of the powerplay. Despite these missed opportunities, Jacks and Suryakumar put on a valuable 71-run partnership. However, their exits in quick succession allowed Gujarat’s spinners, led by Rashid, to tighten the screws and take control of the game.
