MS Dhoni criticized the batters for failing to post a par total on a pitch that offered good support to stroke play.
Dhoni Reflects on CSK’s Struggles at Chepauk After Fifth Consecutive Home Loss

Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni admitted his side fell short once again with the bat, as CSK suffered their fifth straight defeat at home, this time to Punjab Kings. The loss at Chepauk confirmed their elimination from the IPL 2025 playoffs race, marking a disappointing end to their campaign at what was once considered their fortress.
Batting first, CSK were bowled out for 190, unable to even complete their 20 overs as the lower-middle order collapsed in the death overs. Despite a brilliant 88 off 47 balls from Sam Curran, the team lost five wickets in the final two overs, with Yuzvendra Chahal picking up a hat-trick in the penultimate over—an event Dhoni pointed to as a key turning point.
“I think the batting—yes, it was the first time we put enough runs on the board. But was it a par score? I feel slightly short,” Dhoni said after the match, adding that not playing the final deliveries and losing quick wickets cost them momentum. He also emphasized the importance of fielding, stressing, “We need to take our catches,” highlighting that CSK failed to apply pressure with missed chances in the field.
Sam Curran is a fighter: Dhoni

Despite Chennai Super Kings’ fifth consecutive home loss and exit from the playoff race, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni chose to focus on the bright spots, particularly praising Sam Curran’s fighting spirit and Dewald Brevis’ impact. Curran delivered a stellar performance, scoring 88 off 47 balls with 9 fours and 4 sixes, showcasing his ability to take charge on a better batting surface.
“Well, he’s a fighter. That’s something we all know. He always wants to contribute,” Dhoni said, noting that previous sluggish pitches hadn’t suited Curran’s style, but the Chepauk surface in this game was far more favorable. “That’s the reason I felt we needed another 15 runs,” he added, reflecting on the narrow margin that made the difference.
Dhoni also lauded Dewald Brevis for his composure with the bat and energy in the field. “He brings momentum in the middle order. He’s a very good fielder, has power, and can hit good balls for boundaries,” he said. Calling Brevis “an asset going ahead,” Dhoni acknowledged the youngster’s growing importance to the CSK setup.
