After a challenging Test season that saw India lose six of their last eight matches, the spotlight now turns to limited-overs cricket.
The “Men in Blue” are gearing up to host England for a five-match T20I series, followed by a three-match ODI series, as part of their preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
On Saturday, January 11, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed a 15-member squad for the T20I series. The squad includes some notable comebacks, though a few players have missed out, sparking discussions among fans and experts alike.
1. Jitesh Sharma
Jitesh Sharma, who toured South Africa with the Indian squad in November 2024, has been replaced by young prospect Dhruv Jurel. After being a part of India’s T20I setup for nearly 18 months, Jitesh’s run in the squad has come to an end. Sanju Samson’s outstanding performances, including crucial centuries in South Africa, secured his place in the team, while Jurel’s potential as a future star has made him a preferred choice over Jitesh.
2. Vyshak Vijaykumar
Karnataka’s pace all-rounder Vyshak Vijaykumar finds himself sidelined without a chance to showcase his skills on the international stage. The 27-year-old earned his spot for the South Africa tour following stellar domestic performances but was not included in the playing XI. As a result, he has been dropped from the T20I squad for the upcoming series, leaving him to wait for another opportunity to don the Indian jersey.
3. Avesh Khan
Fast bowler Avesh Khan has been left out of the T20I squad for the home series, primarily due to the return of Mohammed Shami. Avesh was a reliable performer during the South Africa tour, complementing Arshdeep Singh effectively in the bowling lineup. With 27 wickets in 25 T20Is, Avesh has shown his worth and will be determined to make a strong return to the Indian team in future series.
4. Yash Dayal
Left-arm pacer Yash Dayal has missed out on a place in India’s squad for the T20I series against England. Despite a remarkable IPL 2024 season with Royal Challengers Bangalore, where he claimed 15 wickets, Yash could not break into the playing XI during the South Africa series. Still waiting to make his international debut, the speedster will aim to convert his domestic and IPL performances into future national call-ups.
5. Ramandeep Singh
All-rounder Ramandeep Singh has been omitted from India’s T20I squad for the England series despite a noteworthy debut in South Africa. Featuring in two games, Ramandeep contributed with both bat and ball, scoring a quick-fire 15 off six balls in his lone batting appearance and claiming his maiden T20I wicket. While the exclusion is a setback, Ramandeep’s all-round capabilities make him a valuable asset for future opportunities.
