IPL 2025: Why Was Ishant Sharma Fined After Sunday’s SRH vs GT Match?

Nearly 12 hours after the match concluded, the IPL issued an official statement on Monday morning. Ishant Sharma had a disappointing outing against SRH in Hyderabad, conceding 53 runs in his allotted four overs.

Ishant is not the first player to face disciplinary action this IPL 2025 season, with five players already fined so far. Alongside him, penalties have been handed to Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya, Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag, Lucknow Super Giants spinner Digvesh Rathi, and their captain Rishabh Pant.

Rathi was fined for his repeated “notebook” celebration throughout the season, while the captains were penalized for consistently maintaining a slow over-rate.

Ishant Sharma Fined for Equipment Abuse After GT vs SRH Match

Ishant Sharma has been fined by the Indian Premier League (IPL) for breaching the league’s Code of Conduct following Gujarat Titans’ match against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Sunday.

According to an official IPL release, Ishant violated Article 2.2 of the BCCI’s Code of Conduct for Players and Team Officials, which pertains to the “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment, or fixtures and fittings during a match.”

The Gujarat Titans bowler admitted to the Level 1 offense and accepted the sanction imposed by match referee Javagal Srinath. As a result, he has been fined 25% of his match fee and handed one demerit point. For Level 1 breaches, the match referee’s decision is final and binding.

Article 2.2 includes any conduct that goes beyond the normal course of play, such as hitting or kicking the stumps, or actions that recklessly or intentionally cause damage to items like advertising boards, boundary fences, dressing room doors, mirrors, or other fixtures. An example cited in the rule is when a player swings their bat in frustration and damages an advertising board.

Despite Ishant’s disciplinary issue, it was a successful outing for the Gujarat Titans, who secured their third win in four matches. The victory helped GT climb to second place on the league table with a healthy Net Run Rate of +1.031.
